Straw that broke the camel's back

Hi Guys,

It's been a long time since the last update, and there are some things that I'd like to say. It might get a bit personal and a bit long. When we first started working on new music we could never have expected how difficult and hard the progress on this album would be.

When it comes to getting good material out, I've always been saying to myself that how hard and frustrating it's ever been getting your music to sound just the way you want it, it is worth it. Sometimes the work is grueling, and yes this time it was the hardest experience yet, but we we were doing something very special. I'm still convinced that the songs we've written together for the last years is the best we've ever done.

About a month ago, everything crashed down on our heads, it was simply to much to handle, both creatively and personally, It had gotten to a point where we simply couldn't cope with the pressures of being in the studio. Without going into the depth of the problems, I could easily have written a book or 2 about all the numerous troubles we've run into during the making of this album. It's very complex so i don't dare going into to much details.

So where do we stand now?

I took some time off, starting to get a grip on where it all had gone wrong, and quickly after the first wave of disappointment of failure, I discovered that we had been lost in the technological mess and the urge and desire of making the fantastic masterpiece. There weren't an ounce left of the simplicity and fun way of making music in the way we had worked in the last years. All the stuff that we once knew had been lost out for many reasons. What wasn't gone, however, was our songwriting and love for the music itself.

So after I had picked myself up, I just wrote it all down. And now after some weeks, i'm very clear of each and all of the wrong turns, and I am so extremely relieved to see that the work is not lost. In fact it's overwhelming to listen back to all the material we've recorded and written. We have all of these amazing songs that just demands to be recorded and released. And i'm over the moon with ideas just how to do it. And the best part is... Now I can see that it's really not that hard to do. I just had to remember and connect myself with the way I used to work in the past, and also we just had to draw a line and say "too bad it didn't happen - but let's do another try."

We're about to have a much needed and long awaited vacation (our postponed honeymoon, as a matter of fact). And with that I'd like to say thanks to you who has been encouraging us during this time, and I'm very much looking forward getting the songs out and getting moonbabies out touring again. The world's floating by (but you're still in a dream)

Hi again! Studioworks been great, albums coming on, everyone's inspired, eveyone's expecting alot which is all good. For me this album has become to be about everything that's wonderful & touching in life. Last time I had a listen to the finished tracks I had goosebumps all over, and that says alot being around these songs for so many hours these past years. There are songs in it that makes me cry, songs that'll make me want to get up and dance and feel a whole lot better. It's a very spontanious record.

Anyhow, we hope to wrap it up pretty soon. Soon is the word.

We got a request from film maker Joachim Hedén to contribute with a couple of acoustic tracks for his upcoming full-length feature movie Framily. Pretty happy with the result, the movies is due to be screened at cinemas in Sweden this autumn. Check out the trailer. You can hear a snippet of one of the new tracks "Leaving Shadows" by the last minutes, just as the clips ends.

Sorry for the wait!

Hi all! Just wanted to express our thanks for your support and understanding that we're well overdue the deadline for our new (the 4th) Moonbabies full-length. For the last months we've been working hard and things are going really well, but as always for us, getting all the ideas and things we hear in our heads onto tape, has been more time consuming than we thought.

A lot of songs has been written and recorded and it's safe to say that this is the most exciting music we've ever done. Pushing our limits hard with the songwriting & arrangments was something we strived for from the beginning. A lot of trial and error, ups and downs, but what counts is the end results, right?

Ohayou! Been a while since the last update. Not been too many interesting things to tell you to be honest. Winter is a drag up north as most of you know. Berlin in the Winter time is horrible, Sweden is equally cold but not as windy for some reason. Anyho! Springtime is here and during the horrid months we've been quite busy in the studio.

At this stage we've a monumental collection of all the ideas that's been recorded and re-written and arranged. So this is finally where the fun starts and the songs are being transformed from ideas to reality. WE'RE ALMOST FINISHED! The album will be out later on this year, and we can't wait to let you hear it. And it'll be such a thrill finally getting to perform this songs live. So stay focused!

Moonbabies at CMJ ´09

Moonbabies @ Crash Mansion, NYC Oct ´09

After some 3+ weeks in bed with most possibly the horrible swineflu we're feeling better and ready to go back to writing and recording our new album. So Yes, last month we flew over the atlantic for our first gigs in the US in 9 years - apart for playing at Eric & Shannon's fantastic wedding in Orlando in Januari! Thanks to all the people who came and supported us at the Brooklyn Vegan party at Pianos on Ludlow Street, at the exclusive Norwood Club and the rough Crash Mansion and last minute gig at South Street Seaport Midnight show. We had a really good time, met a lot of wonderful new friends and also got time to dwell around Manhattan for some lovely days. Special thanks to Henrik, Per, Bill, Holger, Shumai, Eric, Shannon & Rafael for making it a great CMJ experience. Looking forward coming to back to the US in the near future touring with our full set-up and a new album in our backs. Keep you updated!

Hey! We've just temporarily moved back to sunny sweden just to get things down - recordings mostly. The album is still in the state of "whatever happens, happens" and "let's scrap this whole idea" and "wow, this is the best we've ever done, For real!". It may be the hardest ever album to do, which is just what we need at this point. But firstly we need to go to NYC in some weeks and perform at the CMJ festival! First US shows for us since a long time ago. Back then we had just released "June and Novas" and were playing lots of shows in the Northwest - Seattle mostly - which was the homebase for our label back then. Although like in a blur, I remember that the tour went really good and the people were treating us very very lovingly.

So we are doing these shows, and I hope to see some of you there, although showcases are spectacles and you need to buy an expensive badge and all - we'll promise to give you a real treat! And if you come by, promise to come up and say hello. Tschüss! / Ola

So Goodbye Friedrichshain for now. We'll see you next year!
We just packed our stuff and moved to Kreuzberg, which isn't very far but pretty different from our old home. Right now we still have a couple of months to spend in Berlin, and then for the remaining parts of this year we'll be somewhere in Sweden putting the last finishing touches to the new album.

What can I tell you that I haven't said before? The progress on the album is really good. Working as a duo, recording and playing everything ourselves is time taking, but i'm very confident that we have our best album so far in the works.

So how does it sound? Well, It's very emotional yet very bouncy and light and lush, still heavy and... honestly, it's very, very hard to describe. Some songs are dramaticly different from our past records, but it all have a lot of the moonbabies signatures written all over it. It's just new and fresh you see? Confusing. Yes.

Hello! From Our New Studio Space

Hello everyone! Carina and me took our equipment and moved into a great studio space in Neukölln (Berlin) and we are are in the euphoric state recording, writing and mixing songs for our upcoming album. Things are going really well with the new material, and it's fun to be back working really hard on new moonbabies stuff being up all night, finally getting the tracks down. Some of the new stuff has turned out a bit more heavy that we orginally thought, yet some of the new songs are really dancable and light, and some are well... heartwrenching!

The thing is there is something magic about this room. It's something about this place that's seriously takes hold of you. It's sometimes like this with really beautiful, old buildings. Great, but also a bit scary at the same time.

Back in Berlin, had some deep sleep for a few days after some exhausting weeks and very good gigs. Thanks to our live drummer Per Nordborg for coming along with his great (well to be honest, fantastic!) drumming and excellent company as always. Although, the sound and video quality isn't the best we've uploaded a clip of the tracks "Jets" and "Shout it Out" from the gig at K4 in Nürnberg on the 3th of April, watch it above...

Now that we're back, we finally found a great studio space in Berlin to spend the upcoming 2-3 months continue writing and recording. The weather has just turned from miserable to green and loomy, beautiful springtime. I love the smell during late evenings here in Berlin, the city has started to come to life again. Lovely.

Oh yeah, if you're fortunate enough to get your hands on the new book by Håkan Engström called "Rötter" (picture below) there are lengthy, in-depth interviews with different swedish musicians from the south, among them Moonbabies' Carina Johansson. It should be out in stores by now, looking forward reading it myself. He's one of my few favorite music journalists. Best / Ola

Rufus is a japanese band who are big fans of swedish pop music especially in the vein of 90s bands like Eggstone, Komeda, Ray Wonder, The Mopeds. We got introduced to eachother, and a few months later this amazing remix was sent to us.

Hello everybody! This will be the last update in a while, although we will do some small updates once in a while. We got about 3 months here in Berlin before we're going back to Sweden and it's starting to develop into something really unique and interesting. The plan is for us to continue write and record songs in Malmö during the summer and by September-October-November do the final album recordings and mixing. Making this album was considerably more time taking than we imagined in the first place. You want to do something that tops your previous work and also reflects all those thing you truly feel inside and need to express. And what we got is a really good ground and a lot of songideas. But you know, we wouldn't dream of just releasing yet-another-album, it won't just be kind of good - you should expect it to be boiling with the greatest moonbabies songs ever. Guaranteed.

Little Studio Break

Things are going pretty well writing new songs, and last week was really productive. Somehow I suppose that I kind of forgot how much time you actually need to spend on writing and recording songs. At this stage most of the song ideas are there but it's now a big puzzle of sorts how to make it work out the most natural and interesting way.
The songs are starting to take form, but the other essential things like what key and tempo, who's doing lead vocals, overall mood etc. is still being developed with trail and error, so to speak. Which is very time taking... but still a very good way for us to write. It always takes a lot of time to get the material right, and this is always the case (and has always been with moonbabies) but i guess that's why it turns out so well.

However, we will take a short break from the studio soon and do a couple of concerts, looking forward to that as well. These are the dates:

Songwriting

There are lots of stuff in our home studio that are totally new to me, so it's been taking a while for us to find the right way of working this time. Too much good things to fool around with! So actually we're still trying out different ways of being creative in this new environment.

For me the hardest part of writing songs at this point is that I will instantly turn into the "producer" role and then i will either:
a, get to critical toward the material (before the song starts to find itself)
b, get into mixing mode immediately (which isn't to good either, cause you then spend hours mixing demo material which will almost certainly be re-recorded later.)
c, think to much about the arrangement and how everything should be done in the most interesting way
d, most likely, do all of above.

I really envy songwriters who are just concentrating on their thing with piano or guitar and their voice, and let someone else (a producer or other band members take care of the arrangement and production).

Personally I'm working on getting better at just being there in the moment when I'm writing songs, and not be to premature with the arrangement & production of the song. And it's been going a bit better than it used to be. I try to tell my head to keep still and focus on one things at the time.

All in all, I love making music this way and I think that just the two of us are doing everything ourselves is perhaps the biggest reason why I love it so much. I wouldn't want to have it in any other way.

BTW, The Wrestler was an amazing movie, is perhaps the best new movie I've seen in the last 5 years. I was (and am still) totally transfixed by this film. Left me wanting more, so I just had to go through some other Mickey Rourke movies from the 80s like the Barfly (great!) and Angel Heart (Great acting, but the story just got weaker and weaker, with an absolutely horrible ending...). The Wrestler such a triumph for Mickey Rourke, and i just saw that Slumdog Millionaire won all the Oscar awards. That's mental!

FLORIDA vs. BERLIN / SUNSHINE DRINKS vs. BECKS

Back in Berlin after 12 days in sunny Florida, the contrast is vast. From 28 C and sunshine and cool drinks to -3 C and hot Thai food. We had a fantastic time in Winter Park, Orlando & Miami, our dear friends Eric & Shannon - who directed and produced our latest 2 music videos - invited us down to Florida to perform at their wedding. It was magical in so many ways, and one of the best times we've had. You can check out some pics from the wedding right HERE. Love you guys! Past weeks been incredible, and so much fun and exactly what we needed.

So now we're here in Berlin, jet lagged, and already back in business. We'll start tracking some of the new songs this week, and this cold weather is perfect for getting deep down in creativity.
Today we had an excellent meeting with our favorite design bureau here in Berlin, and we're looking forward working together with them on the upcoming release. Yes!, Lovey, Ola

Working hard or hardly working?

What a week! Lots of new songs and new ideas. It's good to be able to let everything grow by itself until it's time to pick it up and finish it.
Right now these are the songs we're working on, (Of course it's all working titles):

"C Song" - two different songs into one, which works really well. Pretty peppy and rough.
"Piano Song" - Really great melody and chords. I picture it to be really dry and fat 70s style sounding. Yet, only the verse is there.
"Watergate Song" - Dancy, can't get it out my head, simply can't stop humming it.
"80tals Song" - 80s inspired kind of ballad. Wierd but there's really something special about it.
"Eli Wallace" - a semi- instrumental western inspired themesong.
"Where the bushes grow" - Great song, 4 parts in different signatures. Works really well together. Darker and more melancolic than the others.
"81" - The chorus and instrumental theme is done, we're still trying out different verses.
"Kicking Away" - Totally catchy verse and the chourses are amazing, still not done with the rest. It's very different from anything we've done in the past. Still it's definately Moonbabies.
"Show some guts"- Just raw and emotional simplistic, and finally it has a chours, which I stole from another of our songideas and it works perfectly.
"My oh my" - Indieguitar song which is the most indie we've done for years. Still it's too damn good not to record."
"Took a long long time" - Wrote it in Holland last year, love it. Still have to find the right way to continue the song, one of the hardest to finish.
"Lego" - Very simple and funny song. Visually it would have worked great with a Lego-styled video.
"Dance to the scene" - Great Chorus, very trippy yet catchy. Looking forward working more on this one, it's a really inspiring song.

Orchestra of Snrubbies

The last days has been feverishly creative. Non-stop working... I just came back to life after a 20 hour sleep. Looked it up and right now we have 12 strong songs/ideas to finish recording and progress further. Since after "Moonbabies at the Ballroom" we've collected all the songs and ideas and it's a pretty huge list about 70-80 songs. But this is usually the way we work, to write a lot of ideas and keep them all, but just pick out the very best of the bunch.

So it's 12 songs to go at the moment, but the idea is to have recorded at least the double amount of songs until we're "qualified" to pick out the right songs for the album. For the Ballroom album we didn't record that many different songs as we did on the first 2 albums where we literaly wrote and recorded hunderds of tracks.

And I think we're back along those lines with this new album. The approach of "in a stream" recording is something that works really good for Carina and me. Enough yack-yack-yack, i'm back to the studio now. Bye O.

From the ice-age to the dole-age

So for the 4th time this winter, I started the new year celebrations by catching a new cold. Another week spent in bed watching movies and being frustrated about not being creative.
Well, now i'm feelin' fine, and will start the new year by finishing a couple of songs i came up with just before I got forced to bed. Our apartment is really cosy & atmospheric right now. I can hear Carina working on a song in the other room. And a big glowing Berlin Bear has moved into our livingroom. One of my favorite birthday presents ever.

In a couple of days we will go and rent a studio here in our neighborhood to record some drums and guitars, will be good to go LOUD for some hours. Our minimal drum set-up consists of a Ludwig Snare 13"x 7" and a Floor Tom 18" and a 18" Zildijan crash. It's very fat & deep sounding. What more can you ask for? Best! O.

Dancing in the sky

Berlin is supposed to be a war zone during New Years eve, and I hate firworks and crackers. So watch it, I ain't gonna go deaf because of some "wild and crazy" dudes.

So, yeah it's almost 2009. In some ways I think 2008 has been my favorite year so far. No particular hard pressure or stress, been feeling as harmonic as I guess I can be. Also all the great stuff, particularly everything regarding our move to Berlin has been just the right vitamines I needed. The Moonbabies tour of Germany in April was also a highlight. Best tour we've done in every way.

So yeah, I guess you can say i'm really thankful for this year. And here i'm happy. I'm also happy because, next year make promise to also be great, and we simply can't wait to record the album and go on tour again.

Berlin is filled-up with Christmas markets, and they're over-sized and pretty cozy. Been glüwiening ourselves around the city all weekend. This time of the year is usually filled with stress, but here we found ourselves in a harmonic state of mind. Lovely.

Yes, we love electronic music. After the move to Berlin we've grown to love it even more. Berlin being the capitol city of Electronic music and all. Going out dancing is now a more or less regular thing, something that would maybe happen once or twice a year for us in Sweden. Been to some clubs in Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg but actually found that the best ones are located right next to us in Friedrichshain. Watergate and Berghain, which we found pretty early after moving to Berlin, mostly thanks to our friend Jan Paul of the german band Computer.

Anyways, some DJs and Artists are unquestionably more interesting than others, and some nights out are truly suffering from the too-damn-uninteresting-repeative music. While a lot of the DJs just blend in their unique flavor and add interesting and very musical textures to this very minimal genre. I think my favorite findings so far are more or less routed to the B-pitch (Berlin) label. Ellen Allien, Modeselektor, Apparat, and a guy who call himself Audio Werner. It's all very danceable (of course) but at the same time music filled with passion and great ideas. And that what gives me the kicks from this music. The combination of upbeat and experimental yet very postive and outgoing.

Btw, Don't expect the next Moonbabies album to be minimal techno by any chance, but I know we're already been bitten by this electronic bug and it's definately inspirational! - O.

Make a wish

Like everone I love when you're getting rewarded for something you've put a lot of love & struggle into. So this Friday was a big day for both me and Carina when we discovered that STIM (the swedish copyright for composers institute) had given both me and Carina a very generous scholarship. It will be extremely helpful to us and we're incredibly thankful for this recognition!

Right now i'm having a big cup of coffee and am going through the BIG list of songs that we've written in Berlin so far. We have a big shiny star hanging in our window to protect us from the cold and greyness of F-hain this time of the year. A Dream. There is a lot of work ahead... O.

January 2008 Holland. This was recorded in our dressingroom some minutes before we're going on stage. You can hear Åsa Gjerstad playing the Cello somewhere in the back, I don't think she wanted to be visible in this video. I've had a pretty rough week prior to this, and right after when we hit the stage I felt all the tensions and underlying stuff just gradually disappearing. Anyway, this song means a lot, it's been living with me for a long time and still keep on bugging me. There are so many good demo versions of Cocobelle, and i'm not sure which ones i like the most. Maybe the first Phil Spector-ish version is still the best? Maybe it's time to post it here?

From Malmö to Friedrichshain

So now we have a great batch of songs written, or partly written. There are still a lots of tweeks and twists before they're even close to being finished. But the fundamental and raw emotional shapes of the songs are definately there. As for recording the new album, we decided to change the way we usually do it. First step was to say bye bye to the studio we always have worked in, and spent a zillion happy´n´frustrating hours in, and take our stuff and move to Berlin. This was probably the best decision we've ever made. It couldn't have happened in a better time of our lives, and after spending some months here in this wonderful and twisted city, we are totally in love. In love with the city, in love with the life we've finally built up for ourselves, and all this naturally goes into a great feeling for writing songs.

What we want to do differently while recording this album is to have a looser approach to getting it together. And after some weeks of discussions we've come up with a great instrument-gear set-up that we will use for this album. I can (and probaly WILL) go into nerdy details about the actual approach in later posts. But fundamentally this will probably be the greatest way for the two of us - being a duo - and still doing everything ourselves, to get everything we want on the spot! Looking forward spending a lot of time playing and recording this next album.

Now we only have to find a rehearsal/studio place in Berlin. Anyone from Friedrichshain have any suggestions?

First post here on our little blog, today is nothing special. We're waiting for our new instruments and cool gear to arrive by mail-order this week. I'm doing webstuff like this and myspace, and catching up with mail, when I really should be finsihing lyrics and parts of a few of the songs we've been working on these last extraordinary months. Ah well, we'll tell you a lot more about all of that later.
